Help us make a difference as an IRM Contract Manager for our prestigious John Lewis contract. To note, IRM stands for Integrated Resource Management and is a specialist division within Biffa.
A quick look at the role:
The IRM Contract Manager will effectively manage client accounts to ensure delivery of excellent service with a value for money approach for all.
The role will ensure the infrastructure is in place to enable the business to be able to respond quickly and effectively to clients' needs which in return will result in first-class customer service.
The Contract Manager will continually strive for improvements in performance of the contract which will advantage the client and also our business in areas such as EBIT targets, recycling and resource initiatives, legislative compliance and health & safety.

1 Work with Site Supervisor(s) and Shift Leaders to manage the day-to-day operation of the contract including operational service levels (as per KPIs), agency personnel, equipment checks and safety standards in accordance with legislation, Biffa guidelines, environmental compliance and customer's defined expectations.
2 Manage the day-to-day operations to maintain excellent standards of Health and Safety and actively drive operational engagement in safe practices through hazard spotting, safety mitigation and operative behaviours.
3 Demonstrate growth and improving operational efficiency of the customer's waste streams by way of improved recycling performance, up-scaling of operations, new waste stream generation plus personnel management.
4 Production of weekly and monthly reports and management information, including provision of data for customer's internal reporting and delivery of all contractual KPIs. Validation of data on reports generated across the operation for accuracy and consistency in formatting. Use this data to drive "intelligent" proposals to mitigate costs and drive operational efficiencies.
5 Implementation of site waste minimisation programmes against agreed improvement targets and strategic plan as well as the implementation of initiatives to reduce cost, improve operational performance and improve general waste handling practices.
6 Maintain full and complete records of all Hazardous Waste that leaves site as per current regulations, ensuring compliance and managing designated hazardous waste are on site(s) in conjunction with Site Supervisor.
7 Give direction and guidance with regards to working practices to all onsite operatives, both directly employed and agency staff, ensuring that all relevant operational standards are understood and adhered to.
8 The operation is 24/7 therefore an out of hours rota needs to be managed whereby the client has an out of hours email contact. Facilitate the managing of this email address to ensure prompt attention and resolutions provided to OOH requests from the client.
Contracts Manager is responsible for maintaining, developing and growing customer sites with regards to the waste management of materials and effective disposal of these segregated materials in with the Account Management Team identifying and implementing new and best practices to provide a first class customer service and account management service.
The role requires the effective personnel management of a large team of operatives, working within a client's site, to meet and exceed customer targets for the operational & Health and Safety management. To include the management of all risk assessment and process guides and work with the JLP Business Manager to implement the site safety development plans.
The role requires excellent housekeeping in terms of reporting all H&S and operational incidents on client and Biffa systems and use these incidents to plan immediate personal training requirements.
In conjunction with the JLP Business Manager the Contract Manager is to hold Monthly Safety meetings, hold these with all Biffa staff in line with significant environmental and safety update. Contract Manager with the support of the JLP Business Manager and Supervisor to create SIT meeting agenda and present to all shifts, & Manage location Safety Boards – recording period safety data and up to date SIT meeting details
In the Role the Contract Manager is required to formalize induction procedures for new staff and support Supervisor & Shift leaders to facilitate equipment and site training. – & complete Biffa onboarding process on internal systems including right to work checks.
The Contract Manager shall preform weekly validation checks on all data capture processing and present compliance performance to the JLP Business Manager.
Manage all ongoing training requirements for new and current staff with the support of the Supervisor and Team Leader and support training requirements for supervisor to include leadership and chemical storage training.
With the support of JLP Business Manager and Operational Supervisor identify any poor performing staff and implement a plan to improve performance.
In this role the contract Manager shall approve/deny all staff holiday requests on Biffa systems, Submit weekly payroll for all Biffa and Agency staff, resolve any pay discrepancies and lead the weekly staff Rota preparation.
The Contract Manager will maintain excellent standards of Personal Protection Clothing compliance by undertaking weekly inventories of onsite stock and ordering suppliers where appropriate.
Through actively managing and working in partnership with the Customer and Account Management Team, JLP Business Manager will explore & implement new business opportunities by agreeing and developing new and existing services.
The role operates within the constraints of the agreement of the contract with the customer. Each solution must meet Biffa's health and safety priority with regards to its people and customers and also the environment.
This role is a site based, hands-on role involving the use of many personal skills such as relationship management, negotiation and people management. There is a need for innovative thinking and is solution driven. With the ability to build key internal relationships at all levels up to Senior Management within the business across a number of departments as well as the ability to build key relationships with external organisations
The job requires the ability to multi task situations that are live – requiring immediate attention and the ability to deliver a first class Customer Service.
The job requires the collation of operational data and the production of regular and varied reports in order to drive intelligent decision making and fully understand the operational aspects of the role.
The post requires good time management, and will liaise with internal and external personnel, have frequent travelling, telephone calls and emails.

Minimum GCSE or equivalent in Maths & English
‘A' Level
IOSH Certificate Experience
Experience as Operations Manager or position of similar responsibility in services / manufacturing industry
People and health & safety management
Proven track record in operational line management
Proven track record of working to clearly defined service delivery KPI's
Proven track record of delivering continuous improvement within an operational / service environment
Profit & Loss experience Technical Knowledge
Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of working within a time critical service
Knowledge of existing and impending environmental and health and safety legislation environment
Knowledge of production management
Waste industry knowledge including relevant laws
Clear understating of the recovered commodities markets and how to drive best valueSkills and Behaviours
Commercial background
Strong presentation, negotiating and influential skills
Ability to work in partnership with customers, peer groups and other organisations including suppliers
Robust and resilient, able to absorb pressure and respond positively
Experience of building and maintaining customer relationships
Experience of operational line management
