The Section Manager will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a section associated with the daily testing of Covid-19 samples. Reporting to the Shift Manager, at least on a daily basis, but as required by circumstance, they assume responsibility for the Section Supervisor and Laboratory Operators/Assistants, escalating where appropriate. They will have overarching responsibility for managing and training laboratory staff, and, with the Section Supervisor be responsible for the timely reporting and investigation of Incidents.
Working closely with the senior BMS, the post holder will manage and continue to develop the SARS-CoV-2 RNA testing processes, to ensure work in the laboratory is undertaken safely, efficiently and to the quality standards required of ISO15189:2012 laboratory accreditation. This will require the post holder to be able to create and review documents in line with the above accreditation using the laboratory eQMS (Q-Pulse). As a Section Manager you will be required to assist with troubleshooting and helping to ensure the validity and quality of results to the highest standards. The role will suit an enthusiastic individual, who is a proven team player with experience in molecular biology methods and people management.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
1. BSc Honours degree in a biological science.
2. Experience within laboratory setting (academic, clinical or industrial)
3. Experience of maintaining documents and procedures within laboratory accreditation specifications (ISO15189:2012/ISO17025:2019)
4. Understanding of the importance of Incident Reporting, RCA and CAPA.
5. A comprehensive understanding of health and safety protocols in a lab environment
6. Evidence of training and supervision of staff in a laboratory setting
7. Demonstrable experience of line managing people
8. Positive attitude with proven problem-solving skills
8. Significant experience in molecular biology, including PCR and immunoassays
9. Experience of working with LIMS
10. Knowledge of health and safety regulations and experience
11. Experience of using liquid handling robots (e.g. TECAN/ Hamilton liquid handling systems) (desirable)
12. Experience of viral RNA testing using real-time (RT) PCR methodology or end-point PCR (desirable)
Covid Lab operations are 24/7, requiring a 12-hour day/ night shift pattern system.
