Entry requirements
Ideally, you’ll need to have GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) in subjects like maths, science, English, and design and technology. A college course in engineering may assist in learning some of the skills required for this role (desirable).

* the ability to follow engineering drawings and circuit diagrams accurately
* excellent practical, problem solving and technical skills
* maths, science and IT skills
What you'll do
To undertake a development programme leading to a National Vocational Qualification as part of an apprenticeship. You’ll usually do either preventative (planned) or emergency maintenance. You’ll be working to the new 18th Edition wiring regulations (effective from July 2018).
In preventative maintenance, your day-to-day duties may include:
* organising routine servicing schedules
* checking and calibrating instruments to make sure they’re accurate
* fitting new parts as required, or as part of a regular replacement rota
* carrying out quality inspections on jobs
Emergency maintenance tasks may include:
* responding immediately to equipment breakdowns
* fixing faults or arranging for replacement equipment to be installed
* keeping production managers informed of progress
Salary Guide – These figures are a guide only for fully qualified employees.
Starter: £18,000 to £22,000
Experienced: £22,000 to £30,000
Working hours, patterns and environment
You'll normally work around 40 hours a week. You may have to work shifts, including nights. Overtime and weekend work may be available. You'll be based in a factory environment. You'll wear overalls, ear and eye protectors, and safety shoes for most jobs
