MPI are looking for a Permanent Electrical Test and Quality Engineer for our client based in Milton Keynes.
Experience
Candidates must have a degree or equivalent in electrical or electronic engineering and experience testing electrical equipment in order to apply for this role.
You will be inspecting and testing a range of electrical switchgear, more complex motor starters and bespoke and hybrid electrical solutions.
The work involves initial inspection and wiring integrity checks, followed by electrical safety tests and then functional tests. The equipment is also varied and whilst we have test procedures for most products you may be required to update these or design and create new test plans. You will also be responsible for quality improvements within the test area, the test processes and the procedures as well as assisting with improvements of our quality management system.
The person
Our client requires someone with experience inspecting and testing electrical equipment, who is focused on quality improvement, is meticulous and thorough, has a great work ethic and a positive attitude.
You must also be articulate and have good communication and IT skills as many of our test procedures need updating and re-writing and this will be part of the role.
We manufacture specialist equipment in small quantities and do not operate any automated test equipment, we therefore require people used to manually testing the operation and performance of devices and who are experienced in inspecting mechanical and electrical assemblies for accuracy and build quality.
Good communications, flexibility, and a preparedness to learn new skills are important. You must be self-motivated and able to work under your own initiative but also to perform as part of a team and to build to high standards whilst under pressure to meet deadlines.
The role
• Inspecting and verifying the correct assembly of our products
• Testing all types of electrical and mechanical products following existing test procedures
• Designing and writing new test procedures based on current and historic data
• Improving quality documentation within test and elsewhere in the business
• Improving the test department operation and organisation
• Surveying and estimating repair costs for faulty equipment
In addition to the main factory based role, there may be the opportunity to travel across the UK and internationally to visit customers
• Installing and commissioning equipment on ships and submarines worldwide
• Fault finding and repairing equipment on site.
Working on ships or submarines you will need a high level of initiative and ingenuity in order to fault find issues within a cramped and pressured environment.
Please note that because of the defence related nature of their business the candidate will be required to undergo security clearance vetting and will need to meet special nationality rules and therefore the vacancy is only open to British Citizens.
Areas of responsibility
Test Engineer
The role involves inspecting and testing a range of electrical switchgear, more complex motor starters, helicopter starter systems and bespoke and hybrid electrical solutions. It also involves fault finding on returned items and the preparation of repair reports and estimates.
• Weighing equipment and creating weight certificates as required.
• Inspecting and verifying the correct assembly of our products.
• Wiring integrity checks.
• Electrical safety tests.
• Functional testing all types of electrical and mechanical products following test procedures.
• Photographing passed equipment.
• Strip and survey – Inspect and diagnose faulty equipment and prepare reports to be used to quote a customer for the full cost of repair and refurbishment of that equipment.
• Preparing certificates of conformity for tested manufactured and bought in items.
Test and Quality Engineer
70-80% of this role will be undertaking the tasks outlined above, but in addition the Test and Quality Engineer will carry out quality related work including the following additional responsibilities: –
• Organisation of the test department
• Management of test documentation.
• Improvement to operation of test department.
• Improving the strip and survey process.
• Carrying out PAT testing of all electrical equipment on site.
• Maintenance of PAT testing records.
• Managing calibration of test and key equipment.
• Maintenance of calibration records.
• Accurately recording the test times and developing a system to correctly forecast test times.
• Suggesting improvements to manufacturing techniques to improve quality.
• Design and develop test equipment to speed up the test process.
• Innovating processes to improve efficiency within test.
• Assistance with the continual review, improvement, and maintenance of our QMS system.
Salary
£28K – £32K depending on experience.
