Graduate Geologists / Civil Engineers – 6 x temp positions

Milton Keynes

6 – 12 months

I am working with a well established geotechnical contractor who is working on a large earthworks project based in the Milton Keynes area.

This is a temporary position lasting a minimum of 6 months with a strong possibility of further work lasting a year.

This project would suit Graduate Geologists/Civil Engineers who want practical experience on earthworks or Lab Technicians wanting to get some site service experience.

Responsibilities

* Defining the extent of soft spots through additional in-situ testing

* Selection of suitable, representative, locations for in-situ testing

* Taking representative samples of excavated material for classification testing

* Undertaking broad material classification by simple observation and site tests (Class 1/Class 2 material)

* Undertaking in-situ Hand Shear Vane (HSV), Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) and Clegg Hammer testing and identification of results not meeting the specification requirements

* Reporting of unexpected ground or ground water conditions or signs of possible instability

* Operation of handheld PDA and GPS equipment

* Reporting of testing and sampling locations

* Delivery of soil samples to the site laboratory

The ideal applicant

* Ability to undertake basic operation of PDA’s, MS Office software and GPS equipment (training provided)

* Practical, can do, attitude to problem solving

* Experience of working on earthworks projects (desirable but not essential)

* Ideally direct experience of in-situ soil testing and soil classification systems but training can be provided

* Awareness of construction site risks and ability to work safely and keep others safe

* Ability to work alone without supervision

* Ability and desire to work as a team player within the Soil Technicans team (up to 8 staff) and the wider site team

* Flexibility to respond to changing demands and support other team members

* Physical ability to safely carry equipment from site vehicles to test locations and undertake in situ testing

* Full UK driving licence

Candidates MUST hold CSCS certification, but appropriate site safety and role specific training will in all cases be provided.

£11.50 per hour

Due to the nature of this role the successful engineers will be subject to random drug and alcohol tests
