Chelton wants you!
Are you on the lookout for an electrifying career in a dynamic, booming industry? Are you passionate about what you do and constantly on the lookout for the next big idea? Then we want you!
Aerospace and defence equipment wouldn’t be able to operate if it wasn’t for avionic manufacturers like Chelton. We pride ourselves on working with customers and being attuned to industry trends to expand the possibilities of aerospace and defence and give our customers a helping hand in achieving mission success. Working in challenging environments, producing failsafe technology with smart thinking – it’s just what we do. But we couldn’t do it without the Chelton A-team. That’s why we’re on the look out to add a Manufacturing Engineer – Mechanical Design to our elite workforce.
No two days are ever the same at Chelton, you’ll constantly be faced with new challenges to overcome. From the very beginning, you will be able to take full ownership and accountability to see products through to success. After all, where would we be if it wasn’t for the people behind the products?
If you’re looking to leave your mark on the world, why not choose the exhilarating world of aerospace and defence and better yet, join Chelton for your chance to innovate, create and excite.
This role will be based at our headquarters in Marlow
As a Mechanical Design Engineer your skills and qualifications will ideally include:
* BSc (hons) or MSc in mechanical engineering
* 3D M-CAD solid modelling and topology optimisation expertise.
* Charted engineer or working towards a charted engineering.
* Design for manufacturing and design for assembly process using digital twin.
* Experience in FE modelling on composite material is an advantage.
* CAD/CAM machining simulation training / certification
* Six sigma green belt certification.
* Ability to work with different functions and suppliers to understand their preferences and requirements so that an optimum cost model can be developed. There will be trades (i.e. compromises) but they need to be justified.
* Ability to work with models and designs that are not fully complete, and the ability to define definition preferences.
As a Mechanical design engineer your key responsibilities will include:
* Gate keeper for all manufacturing models and engineering drawing used by operations and external manufactures.
* Maintain mechanical 3D solid modelling capability and provide training and mentoring other MEs.
* Create a tooling data base with all fixtures and tooling used by the company. Develop a scan data collection and 3D sold modelling of all tools and fixtures.
* Composite material manufacturing process controls. Production improvements using lean six sigma.
* Composite manufacturing process controls- compression moulding, wet layup, injection moulding. Mould tooling design and manufacturing.
* Lead the lean manufacturing process and production efficiency improvements.
* Design tooling, fixtures and assembly models and drawings for internal and external manufacturing.
* Produce 3D solid models for model based manufacturing work instructions.
* Process simulation of manufacturing process and optimisation of manufacturing process.
* Introduce best practice PLM and MES system into operations.
* Producability of parts based on model based manufacturing. Manage a smooth transition of NPI into production.
* Owning the unit cost models for newly designed parts for the Operations function. Capturing any changes to the cost model in terms of both Unit Costs and Operational Assumptions – for example design changes or volume changes – so that traceability can be understood easily during the design process.
* Supporting NPI programs with the DFMA, tolerance, design optimisation and value engineering support.
* Model based manufacturing and topological optimisation of all 3D solid models.
* Working with our supply chain (internal and external) to review designs in progress so that the best cost model decision can be made based on the data provided – for example balancing higher tooling costs with lower unit against lower tooling costs with higher unit costs for different volume scenarios. Providing break-points for the above scenarios and feeding any capital requirements into the departmental / project budgets.
* Capturing operational best practice / preferences and developing cost models to allow Design Group to ‘trade’ different attributes – for example cost vs weight.
* Helping to develop a low-complexity: high-variety product mix based on standard family templates.
* Where possible, highlighting and driving new processes / methods developed for new parts back into our legacy products.
Remuneration
In addition to a competitive salary, you will also join a flexible benefits scheme offering private medical insurance, life assurance, matched pension and 25 days holiday per annum with the ability to buy and sell days. We are also happy to offer flexible working and a part-subsidised cafeteria.
