Overview
Pertemps Recruitment on behalf of Buckinghamshire Council has an exciting opportunity for a Coroner's Officer to join the Registration, Coroners & Trading Standards Team in their office in Beaconsfield (HP9 area). Working alongside the Senior Coroner's Officer you will play an important role in supporting the investigation of any sudden or unnatural deaths, make enquiries into potential treasure finds, and working with the Senior Coroner and Head of Service to ensure an effective Coroner's Service is provided to the public
About the role
As a Coroner's Officer you will have a number of responsibilities including, but not limited to the following:
Ensure that reports of sudden, violent, suspicious or unnatural deaths are recorded, assessed and investigated, and reported to the Senior Coroner (herein called the Coroner). Obtaining all relevant information including social and medical history.
To gather evidence to assist the Coroner in establishing the identity of the deceased and ensuring that personal property is properly secured and stored. Ensuring that all property relevant to the Senior Coroner's inquests is managed properly and appropriately.
Arrange for the transfer of the deceased to the designated mortuary, so that a post mortem examination can take place. To liaise closely with Consultant Pathologists and their staff.
Co-ordinate and attend inquest hearings, including summoning and warning witnesses. To act as court official for the Coroner to ensure the efficient running of the court. To deal with associated paperwork and processes outside and after the hearings.
Liaison with families regarding cause of death and explanation of procedures. To provide guidance to families and relative about inquests and associated processes.
To record, assess and investigate reports of potential treasure and arrange inquests as appropriate.
This is a temporary position until 31 March 2022, though there is potential for this to be extended further. The pay rate is £17.60 per hour, and you will be working full time, 37 hours per week. Buckinghamshire Council are currently working on a hybrid basis where you will work remotely for 3-4 days per week and in the office 1-2 days per week.
About you
We are looking for someone with the following traits and experience:
Educated to NVQ 4 / degree standard or equivalent experience
Good understanding and knowledge of Coroner's law so the postholder is able to make recommendations to the Coroner
Being able to deal with several cases at once; to progress files without supervision; to pro-actively ensure all data is obtained and recorded and bring strands of information together; to use initiative to ensure paperwork and investigations are thorough and workload is progressed
Able to deal with traumatic and distressing situations (to be able to talk about these situations to family members; attending scenes of death and being able to cope with whatever the situation may present)
Research, investigative and analysis skills demonstrating evidence of the ability to identify and diagnose problems / issues and develop solutions / recommendations
Confident able speaking in court and present witness statements with good clarity, intonation and tone
Work as part of a small team, offering support to others and being a keen team player; creating a pleasant working environment for all
Experience of using MS Office; to learn the bespoke Coroner package and enter details with accuracy and completeness
